Unleash your superpowers and silence self doubt!

I started my career as a Print media Graphic Designers, people from same profession would agree that our work is constantly under criticism scanner from every corners and as a women self doubt has been part of me while I was growing in my career.

Have you ever felt this inner voice saying

Do i deserve this ?

Was i lucky to get this?

Will I be able to do this?

Am I skilled enough to take this role ?

‘X’ is better than me

I am sure, you are not alone, many of us has indulged in such negative self-talk or irrational fears of the future. The belief that you’re unskilled, inferior to others, despite your successes or accomplishments is nothing but imposter syndrome.

Today, I am experienced UX professional with over 14yrs of industry experience, still whenever I am facing a bunch of people, my nerves start acting up, when i am reminded its me 5′ lady, not so skilled as they are, will i be able to pull this of?

This feeling like ‘you are not good enough’, ignites anxiety and low confidence that literally stops me from doing something which i am good at otherwise.

Few very common situations you must have experienced self doubt or imposter syndrome are

– Job application

– Taking up extra work and making sure you will do it all

– Not attending events, fairs, shows etc..

– Downplaying your abilities during conversations

– Shrugging off compliments because you don’t believe them

– Underselling yourself

How did i manage those weird anxious feelings get in the way? Here are few quick tips

– Self-awareness: Acknowledge how are you feeling and pinpoint why are you feeling that way, this will help you understand the trigger points.

– Focus on all your unique skills, strengths, accomplishments that makes you different from the next person and list them down.

– Be honest: Do a realistic evaluation of your strengths and weaknesses.

– Start a conversation with trusted mentor, friend on how they handle the similar situation.

– Stay Confident – Put on something that makes you feel comfortable and confident (we usually underestimate the importance of).

– Help others: Share knowledge experiences with your peers facing similar situations, and see the change.

– Never go alone: Attend events, seminars, with someone you know can help you feel more confident and less nervous.

Remember, you are not alone feeling that way, so celebrate your achievements and come out of that creepy feeling. Give yourself a break and understand that you will make mistakes along the way. Go out, stay connected, keep networking, talk to your mentors, take up a new job or assignments, enjoy the compliments, accomplishments, keep upskilling — and continue to scale buildings like the superheroes we are.
